When our son, Mike, was 18 months old, we learned that he was a year behind in his speech and language development. With intensive, specialized intervention, Mike learned to communicate well enough to be able to attend mainstream kindergarten with the support of a one-on-one aide. Mike did relatively well in kindergarten and first grade, but encountered new challenges in second grade. Mike's teacher explained to us that by the end of second grade, it was "normal" for a child to adjust their behavior based on the reaction of their peers. Mike was not only failing to adjust, he was not even perceiving that the other children were expecting him to do so. We knew that Mike was not going to be able to read the reaction of his peers and that we needed a different method of teaching Mike acceptable social behavior. In this book, I share the strategies we used to get Mike communicating, teach Mike appropriate social skills, and help Mike transition to college. Our road has not always been smooth, and we still face many challenges, but when we look back at how far we have come, we have great hope that Mike will be able to fully support himself, and, if he chooses, have a family of his own. When I started writing this book, we were in the phase of our parenting journey where we were still learning to be comfortable with different. After being on this road for over twenty years, for us, autism is the new normal.
